Sonoma County Authors, Author and Visual Artist Works, Presses, and Publishers
Sonoma County has a long and rich literary tradition, from Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo in the early statehood days, through Anna Morrison Reed, Jack London and M.F.K. Fisher, to the current day. Our Local Authors project presents a catalog of many -- but not all (yet!) -- of these writers. All the writers we present have lived in Sonoma County at some point in their life and for the majority of writers, Sonoma County Library owns at least one of their works.
Black Sparrow Books was the most notable local press, operating in Santa Rosa under the direction of John and Barbara Martin from 1996-2002, and responsible for promoting the poet Charles Bukowski, as well as Sonoma County authors David Bromige, Andrei Codrescu, and Sherril Jaffe. But numerous others also claim a Sonoma County address, if only to publish the works of their founders. Each profile includes contact information for owners/founders (if available), and authors published.
The Literary Update is a compilation of announcements sent in by members of the Sonoma County literary community regarding workshops, readings, ongoing literary and writing groups, calls for submissions, and contests. See the current Literary Newsletter and Calendar for Sonoma County for a complete list of author-events and workshop schedules, addresses and directions to the event locations, as well as bios of the presenters.
